Types of Residential Garage Door Openers

Garage door openers come with 2 motor options:

  1. AC (Alternating Current) – generally rated by horsepower (HP).
  2. DC (Direct Current) – generally rated by newtons (or some manufacturers say HPS (horse power equivalent)- uses less electricity.

In addition, they have options for the rail drive:

  • Belt, a steel-reinforced belt that runs virtually silently and requires no maintenance
  • Chain, a metal chain similar to a bicycle chain- noisier and requires some maintenance
  • Shaft drive, which mounts on the wall at the side of the garage door utilizing the torsion line. Nothing needs to mount to the ceiling. This is used in certain applications when a belt or chain rail type operator will not work.
  • Screw drive, an older style that is phasing out and Precision Door does not recommend it for new openers.
